Uses Of Neti Pots
A neti pot is a small pot commonly used for irrigating human passages of the nasal cavity. It’s comprised of a spout that is usually attached to the bottom and the handle on the opposite side. They are constructed using glass, clay, different types of metals, ceramic or plastic. The metal and plastic kinds are the most durable of all these. Today, those available in various pharmacies are usually made of plastic that is flexible and easily condensed to provide extra pressure. They are used for flushing of the nasal cavities using gravity to pull the flow of neti pot salts or saline.
Different strategies have been used over the recent years that include bulb syringes involving squeezing the bulb to create a flow and pulsatile advanced devices that physically pump out the salt. A user can use bulb syringes to provide total control over pressure. Usually, pulsatile devices operate at a constant pressure requiring a turn of the control knob by the user. It is advantageous in that only the head is required to be turned by the user to control or relieve pressure. The origin of neti pot can be traced from when they were used for yoga to clear nasal passages. This was useful as the ability to control breathing is important in yoga. Introduced thirty years ago in the western culture, it has given rise to a common practice referred to as Jala Neti.
To use it, requires the mixing of neti pot salt and water that is then placed or poured into the nasal passages. It is recognised to treat sinusitis, some nasal conditions and hay fever. For Neti, both hypertonic and isotonic salt solutions are used.
The practice of saline nasal irrigation is used widely by individuals to help relieve or ease some conditions like minus sinus infection and colds.
